Kimball Tavern
Sold
The sale of Kimball
Tavern in November, 2008 at auction was a surprise
to everyone. The Bradford Alumni Association
partnered with the Haverhill Historical Society, the
Congregational Church, and interested neighbors to
try to purchase the building. Unfortunately, we were
out-bid by the Woods family of Haverhill. The Woods
family has purchased Kimball in the hope of
restoring the building and preserving it for future
generations. It is unknown what the use of the
building will be. The Woods family is eager to
restore the building in an appropriate historic
context. The Bradford Alumni Association is working
with the Woods family and has volunteered to
supervise two interns from the Northern Essex
Community College to research the physical history
of the building so that the most accurate historic
reinterpretation of the building can be achieved.
The interns are initially researching documentation
on windows, siding, roofing material, and landscape
design. You may recall that Bradford College
restored Kimball in the 1970’s. Documentation from
this restoration, as well as additional sources, is
being reviewed. A compilation of this information
will be presented to the Woods family so that their
restoration of Kimball can be as accurate as
possible.
The Woods family is
discussing the possibility of opening an antiques
business or other compatible use in the Kimball
Tavern. We are happy to report that the Woods family
is doing a marvelous job restoring the building to
date. They have removed paint, sanded floors,
replaced the heating system, and added
air-conditioning. We are anxious to see the final
results.
