Bradford College
Monuments
Several Bradford College monuments and
markers are currently being reviewed by the
Bradford Historic Commission for possible
installation. T
The first marker is planned to be situated in
front of Kimball Tavern. The new owners of
Kimball Tavern, the Woods Family are long
time residents of Bradford. They have
resurrected a buried mill stone from the Kimball
property. The family would like to
install the mill stone standing perpendicular to
the ground and place a marker in front
of the mill stone. The marker would date
Kimball Tavern and explain that Bradford Academy
was founded at that site in 1803.
A Bradford College monument is being
discussed for the Bradford common. The
Bradford Common is owned by the Congregational
Church that stands across the street. The
church is reviewing plans to have an obelisk
installed on the common that would outline the
three major campus time periods - Bradford
Academy, Bradford Junior College and Bradford
College. The obelisk would stand
approximately 7 feet tall on a base of
granite.
The final marker for Bradford is being
discussed with Zion College. Dr.
Charles Crabtree, President of Zion College, has
suggested that there be a marker at the
"heart of campus" to commemorate the 197 year
old Bradford institution. Initial
concept drawings are being prepared to set a
marker in what many alumni remember as
"the cookie." The "cookie" is
that circle of land directly in front of
Academy Hall. It is rumored that there are
time capsules buried from previous Bradford
classes in this spot of campus. The Bradford
Alumni Association is endeavoring to fund
this monument and hopes to incorporate
elements of our Bradford
history. Donations for each of these
Bradford monuments are actively being
sought.
